Using the Home Max requires your voice to call up the tunes, or you can do things strictly on your iPhone, Android device or tablet by tapping the Cast button in your favorite streaming app. The sound fills the room, especially if you have other Google Cast-enabled speakers to help out. But even by itself, it’s plenty strong enough to bring the party – even if it’s not capable of 360-degree sound like the Apple HomePod.

No the Google Home Max isn’t spying on you, as in, it isn’t recording your conversations and delivering them to some foreign government. There are some privacy issues that you should be aware of before you put this thing in your bedroom. For one, some Google Home recordings in the past were leaked thanks to contractors that had access to the recordings. Basically, when the Google Home can’t understand a certain command, Google keeps the audio clip to analyze it to try and fine tune how the speaker understands regular speech.

Most domestic lightbulbs have a very warm white hue, so the screen tilts towards a warmer, yellowy tone. You can turn this feature off if you find the look too soft. YouTube and Google Play video content are the two top sources. Again, though, YouTube navigation on the Google Nest Hub Max’s touchscreen has been deliberately limited to stop it from seeming like a tablet that you happen to be able to talk to. You can’t rifle through categories as you might do on a tablet, phone or smart TV interface.

It sounds good enough to act as a mini Hi-Fi, Google Assistant feels responsive and the large screen lets you watch YouTube while you cook. Thanks to its display properties, it's also one of the best digital photo frames you can buy right now. We'd like to have seen track navigation controls onboard—you'll be skipping tracks either on your phone itself or with the power of your voice and Google Assistant. But there's no reason to exclude them from the design if you're choosing to include volume and playback controls.
All in all, the Google Nest Hub Max is still not just a great smart display but a great smart speaker and a way to stay entertained while you wait for your onions to sauté. However, we would not be surprised if some people never discovered some of these interface parts. You can treat this as a pure voice-controlled speaker, and only use the touchscreen to select videos in YouTube. You can avoid this partially by using Chromecast, Google’s content streaming standard. The Google Nest Hub Max does show up in the Spotify app as a connected speaker, though.
Google Home Max price and release date
The Home Max is packed with two tweeters (0.7in) and two dual voice-coil woofers (4.5in). It’s hard to recommend a smart speaker over a dedicated home audio setup or any other Bluetooth speakers, but the Google Home Max has weaved its way into my life in a way other products haven’t. I admit, I’m already in the group of people that use a Google Home, but that’s mainly for setting alarms, timers, and asking it questions while I cook.
Then I played back a recording of myself saying “Hey Google” and played it from a separate speaker at distance of 5, 10, 15, and 20 feet. Sure, this isn’t the most scientific test ever devised but it does highlight how at higher volumes the microphones on the speaker have a hard time picking up voices. Of course, it still features Google Assistant – the company’s virtual assistant, for voice control and other functions – which includes voice recognition of up to six users for access to personal playlists. Google’s big, premium Apple HomePod rival the Home Max is finally being released in the UK today, bringing Google Assistant to the high-end smart speaker market. Normally, if you place a speaker in the corner the low end sounds amplified, almost like putting your smartphone in a cup. But the Google Home Max self-adjusts in order to make sure the sound stays consistent. This is good if you don’t feel like going through the trouble of EQing your music yourself, but not so good if you do because you won’t have that level of control. All you get is the basic bass and treble sliders in the Google home app. I did have some issues with the speaker hearing me when I spoke to it while music was playing, but I’ll get into that later.
This is a powerful sound that'll appeal to fans of deep bass, yet the speaker doesn't forsake the overall balance of the mix, as the highs are also well represented. While the Max is able to compete with the audio quality of smart speakers created specifically by audio companies, it outshines them when it comes to the use of voice tech. It probably shouldn't come as a surprise that the software Google created works the best on Google's own products. Anecdotally, the microphones pickup Google Assistant's wake-word more consistently and accurately than the hardware of competitors in the space. So let's say the built-in Google Assistant functionality is worth about $50 of the $400 price tag—that would mean the Home Max should sound as good as a $350 speaker, right? Compared with some of our favorite standard wireless speakers in this price range, like the Klipsch The Three and the JBL Boombox, the Home Max is most definitely a competitor.
And potentially Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Homewhich is expected to retail for slightly less than Apple’s smart speaker. The premium smart speaker is available to buy from the official Google store or at selected John Lewis stores. When the mute switch is flicked the dots light up red until you turn the mics back on.
It also adjusts sound settings depending on what song you’re listening too, so it should always be playing sound at its absolute best. It’s unclear just how this will impact sound quality – what with Home Max shifting the balance on the fly – but as this is a device made for audiophiles, it’s likely Google has tried hard to limit distortion. A silicone rubber base ships with the Home Max, and can be placed beneath it to keep it from dancing across tabletops. The same base, which resembles a gray pancake with a Google G at its center, can be placed on the right side panel, and the speaker can be flipped vertically. If you're using only a single Home Max speaker, you should use it horizontally.
The Google Nest Hub Max’s volume is measured on a 1-10 scale. It sounds great up to 9, but 10 is a step too far. You may find it ends up slightly too quiet, or slightly too loud. Google may address this in an update if enough people agree. This crops the image to suit the number of people on-screen. It seems impressive until you consider how long Google has worked on image analysis and face recognition.
