2023 MacBook Pro M2 Max benchmarks leak, showing big performance gains

The beefy Mac Studio can already be configured with an M1 Ultra processor which has a 20-core CPU and can go up to a 64-core GPU, along with 128GB of RAM. Basically, there's too much smoke clouding the sky for this product to never make its landing. But because it's a brand new device the company has the most flexibility as to when it wants to demo it to the public.

The sound can be a little too revealing, and guitar lines in particular can sound a little too piercing for comfort. If you mainly want background music, you should spend half as much on the Sonos One. Ty Pendlebury is a journalism graduate of RMIT Melbourne, and has worked at CNET since 2006.

The Google has better controls and has an excellent-performing Google Assistant built-in. However, the Sonos can produce more low-bass and has a better-balanced sound profile, which makes it better suited for music. You can manually boost or cut the Max’s bass and treble levels plus or minus 6dB, but Google says the Home Max’s audio performance will automatically improve over time. The speaker uses its onboard microphones to evaluate the environment it’s playing in and will tune itself accordingly. Its balanced mid-range can reproduce vocals and lead instruments clearly, but its underemphasized treble can make audio dull.

No other track I tried illustrated this better than "Yulunga " by Dead Can Dance. With this track spinning from Spotify, the Google speaker exhibited a huge sound that extended beyond the boundaries of the cabinet. All of the elements -- the singer's voice, the left-right panned shaker eggs, the various drums -- are treated equally, and none of them jut out awkwardly.

That said, browsing is basically impossible because you’re interfacing with your TV through voice. You have to know what you want to watch, and then tell the Google Home Max to cast it. When it comes to setting up a home audio system, it usually requires some confusion and a bunch of cables. That’s been slowly getting better , but that’s not an issue at all with the Google Home Max. Setting it up is as easy as plugging it in and opening up the Google Home app. It’s very similar to how easy Sonos makes setting up with their app.

The Google Home Max is a powerful, voice-activated speaker designed to provide superior sound quality for your TV. It has a full range of features, including the ability to stream music from online services, control your smart home devices, and access the Google Assistant. With its large size and high-end audio components, it can provide an immersive sound experience that rivals that of a home theater system. Using Google Home Max is a great way to enjoy your favorite music, ask questions, and control compatible smart home devices. The Google Home Max is a voice-activated speaker that works with the Google Assistant to provide hands-free control of your compatible devices.

What does a Google Home Max do

Also, its voice assistant does a better job understanding you when you're in a noisy environment. However, the Google has a more neutral sound profile out-of-the-box. There’s currently no way to have the Google Home Max act as a wirelesssound bar for your TV. Google told Digital Trends it’s a highly requested feature that the company is looking into, but it will take time to overcome some technical challenges such as syncing the audio and video. You could, however, connect a TV’s analog audio outputs to the Max’s 3.5 mm analog audio input with an adapter cable, though. Set up of the Max is pretty straightforward — all you need to do is plug in the device, download the Google Home app if you haven’t already, and follow the setup instructions from there.

In keeping with the minimalist aesthetic of products such as the Google Home Mini and Daydream View, the Google Home Max demonstrates that twill is the new piano black. The whole front of the speaker is covered in a gray cloth while the back is a smooth, matte plastic. The Google Home Max is also equipped with far-field microphones that enable it to hear you from anywhere in the room. This means that you can ask questions or give commands from across the room without having to shout or walk close to the speaker. When available, your speaker or display will automatically update to the latest software version. I had mixed results with adjusting volume, although play/pause seemed to work fine.

Google provides a generous 6.5-foot power cable with a diminutive two-prong plug at the end (death to wall warts!), which makes the speaker easy to place. Two of the Max’s far-field microphones are on the left side, so you wouldn’t want that to become the bottom. The Google Home Max is the best-sounding smart speaker on the market, but there are plenty of “dumb” powered speakers that sound better. While it's a stereo sound when placed horizontally, the directivity is quite poor, resulting in a soundstage that feels a bit more closed-off. The speaker automatically becomes mono whenever placed vertically, but we don't test for this.

For a smart speaker with a better soundstage, check out the Bose Home Speaker 500. It has built-in Google Assistant, and the speaker can hear you even if you're far away. You can also mute the microphone if you don't want the speaker to listen to you. Unfortunately, it's soundstage isn't perceived as very large or directional. Tap the center to play and pause, and press and hold to activate the Assistant (or say “Hey Google). You can slide your finger on the side or top of the device to control sound — depending on whether it’s sitting upright or laying flat horizontally.

Basically, when the Google Home can’t understand a certain command, Google keeps the audio clip to analyze it to try and fine tune how the speaker understands regular speech. Because of the large size, the Google Home Max can really push some air so the low end is fairly strong just because of physics. The rubber bass pad also keeps the rumbling of the speaker from disturbing anything around it. The small lights behind the fabric light up when you speak or adjust playback. Most Nest smart displays and Wi-Fi devices have a Thread border router built in, so you won’t need a separate hub for adding Thread devices to your smart home.

The biggest issue with the Max's sound was its potentially piercing midrange. Unfortunately I couldn't adjust it out; turning treble down all the way didn't help much. If you like Dick Dale or bluegrass violin solos, maybe you should consider a different speaker.

The Google Home Max is the first smart speaker we've seen with serious audio performance. Our dynamics tests measure how well a device reproduces the energy level of a sound source, taking into account attack, bass precision, and punch. Michael Brown / IDGThis touch-sensitive strip on the top of the speaker controls the volume and can play/pause your music. Getting a review unit late, as is the case with the Google Home Max, gives me the benefit of reading a lot of people’s opinions of a product before I formulate my own.
